Student: DERICK LUAN FERRO DA SILVA

ABSTRACT: The reality of indigenous peoples in urban areas is a space marked by contradictions and challenges. At the university, these people are faced with an urban reality that differs from the ways of life and cultures present in the village, that is, they need to face the process of adaptation to the new territory - university and urban. Thus, this dissertation aims to analyze the contradictions and challenges faced by indigenous students in higher education when they come to live in the city of Belém. To this end, this work identifies the difficulties of access and permanence that indigenous students face in higher education; maps the difficulties of adaptation to living in the city for the indigenous student, and demonstrates how these difficulties can interfere with good performance and conclusion of the undergraduate course; affirmative action in higher education; the permanence of indigenous people in higher education; indigenous people at the Federal University of Pará - UFPA; territory; territorialities; specific territorialities; and indigenous people in the city. In addition, the field research involved semi-structured interviews and forms, as well as being developed in partnership with the Research Project "Counter Cartographies: Alternatives of decolonial development: social cartography of the territories of traditional populations in Pará and Minas Gerais" and directed at a sample of 17 (seventeen) indigenous students at the UFPA living in the Guamá neighborhood. The results achieved demonstrate the difficulties that the indigenous students encounter when living in the urban territory and remaining in the university territory, among them, the adaptation to the new dwellings, freedom, security, and the absence of green spaces, among others. Furthermore, the research findings reveal the strategies used by the students to face these obstacles, both in the cultural rescue for the new territory and in the formation of groups and collectives to strengthen their identity, such as the Association of Indigenous People Students of UFPA - APYEUFPA. In summary, it is evident that the reality of indigenous students requires an understanding of the different territories – origin, urban and university.
